Thousands of Waterfalls Delight in Croatia’s Plitvice Lakes National Park

If you like waterfalls, do I have the place for you! And now is the time to go—either physically or virtually—when the falls are full. It’s another UNESCO World Heritage Site: Plitvice Lakes National Park in Croatia, a five hour drive south of Vienna.

Elevated wooden paths lead you over or beside 16 or so lakes cascading one into another, where you can view hundreds of waterfalls (or thousands, depending on how you count them; I quickly gave up counting—it was both confusing and overwhelming). Rather than wearing away rock to create waterfalls, here the water, sometimes turquoise, sometimes green, sometimes black, builds the waterfalls with its calcium carbonate and help from bacteria and algae. The forests here are also remarkable; I'd like to see them again in summer, autumn and winter.
