Buffon's Forge

One of the world’s greatest scientists we never heard of–and should have– is Georges-Louis Leclerc, Count of Buffon, aka ‘Buffon’ for short (7 September 1707 – 16 April 1788). He was a pioneer in the study of natural history, a scientist, biologist, naturalist, geologist, mathematician, cosmologist and author of more than thirty volumes of Histoire Naturelle. Appointed Keeper of the King’s Garden and Natural History Cabinet in Paris, he traveled extensively studying animals and minerals and adding to the King’s collection. He also built a forge near the town of Montbard in 1768, notable for its advancements in technology.

The lovely River Armancon....

The forge’s gallery where visitors were invited to watch.

Water diverted from the River Armancon powered the machinery.
